Self- Selected Reading
Students need to consistently read high-interest texts at their level in order to increase reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. This can be achieved in school through a self-selected reading practice that incorporates sustained reading, journaling and conferencing with a teacher. Resources to support implementation of this are found below:
Practices Include:
- Students select texts from classroom library, media center, or out of school source.
- Teachers encourage students to select texts that are within their instructional level (i.e., challenging enough for students to stretch their vocabulary and comprehension, but not so challenging to overwhelm the student without significant teachers support).
- Students complete daily journal based on standards-based questions prompts (see examples here)
- Teacher circulates throughout classroom during SSR, reads and provides feedback on journals, and asks one or two questions to push the students' thinking further. By using standard-based question stems, rigor is increased and the teacher is able to tie SSR to the theme/ targets of the lesson.

Setting up for Strategic Reading:
Each classroom has a small library of books and magazines from which students choose an item for their own private reading. The items in this library are selected for content that interests most teenagers. Logs and journals are used to record what each student expected and gained from each selection. Some separate learning stations with audio books that can be followed in print and with writing aides are also available for occasional student use during this portion of the class period.
