Students will engage in reading every day in English Language Arts
Effective Reading instruction incorporates a balance of literature - including fiction, poetry and drama, as well as non-fiction, including informational texts and literary non-fiction
Reading Practices include:
- Beginning with the end in mind: Standard 10 - By the end of grade, students can read and understand informational and literary texts at the high end of the text complexity band proficiently and independently for sustained periods of time.
- Regular practice with independent reading
- Regular practice with close reading of complex text
- Including use of standards-aligned text- dependent questions and/or prompts, including questions and tasks that demand higher order thinking skills
- Reflecting a balance among connected fiction, non - fiction and poetry
- Opportunities to speak and listen about their reading
- Opportunities for distributed summarizing (effect size 1.00) and writing to learn (effect size .82)
- Opportunities for Self-selected reading with journaling and/or conferencing
